    John Douglas Rayburn is the President and Owner of Rayburn Fire Scene Investigations, Inc.

    Mr. Rayburn is a Nationally Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI), Certified Fire Investigator (CFI) and Certified Vehicle Fire Investigator (CVFI).

    He has taught at the International Association of Arson Investigators conferences on the subject of spoliation of evidence.

    Mr. Rayburn has been in fire service for over twenty years with the North Riverside Fire Department in North Riverside, IL. He holds the rank of Lieutenant, Lead Fire Investigator, and Fire Inspector. He has been the Fire Investigation Coordinator for the fire investigation team for the surrounding seven communities around North Riverside, IL.

    Mr. Rayburn has actively investigated over 4000 fire investigations and has been court qualified in fire investigation testimony.

    Along with my extensive background in investigations, I am an independent international contractor specializing in instruction of Arson, fire and explosion scene investigations. I combine both dynamic classroom presentations and hands on exercises to help my students understand the complexities of such investigations.

    I have taught independently, as well as in a team setting, for various agencies and groups around the country including Illinois, Wisconsin, New York, and the city of Seattle and King county fire investigation group in Seattle, WA. Furthermore, I am scheduled to teach in Maine in 2014. Additionally, I am a member of the Technical Working Group for Fire and Explosives (TWGFEX).

    Also, I traveled to Algiers, Algeria (Africa) for Engility Corporation on behalf of the United States Department of Justice and the ICITAP program as a forensic advisor/Law Enforcement consultant teaching arson and explosion scene investigation and evidence collection & analysis to the National Police Arson Investigators and Laboratory personnel from the Defense Ministry.

    My background spans over 21 years of fire investigation related experience and 25 years in the fire service. I have conducted fire investigations, which included residential structures, commercial structures, large scale losses, and vehicles. I have been accepted as an expert witness and provided court testimony in both criminal and civil cases. I have also consulted on product subrogation and services liability resulting from accidental and incendiary fires.

    Derek Zdenovec has been a Fire Investigator with FSI since 2006.

    He has completed the Fire and Arson Investigations curriculum through the Illinois Fire Service Institute endorsed by the National Fire Academy.  He has completed the Certified Fire Investigator with the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshall, Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) with the National Association of Fire Investigators and is a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators.

    In addition, he is a professional Firefighter / Paramedic with the Village of North Riverside with over 15 years of experience.  He is also a member of the MABAS Division 11 Fire Investigations, Technical Rescue and Hazardous Materials Team.  Furthermore, he has obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Service Management at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science Technology from College of DuPage.

      Elisabeth Wallich has been a Certified Fire Investigator since 2004.  In November 2017, she retired from the Milwaukee Police Department after 25 years of service.  She has been investigating fires in Milwaukee since 1998.  In 2001, she was promoted to the rank of Detective and assigned to the Arson Squad.  As an Arson Detective, Elisabeth investigated between 150-200 fires per year.  She has been the lead investigator on multiple Homicide/Arson cases with suspects that were successfully prosecuted.  She was a lead investigator for the 2010 fire involving the Pizza Man restaurant and coordinated multi-agency scenes on a regular basis.  Elizabeth has extensive experience with interviewing victims and witnesses, as well as interrogating suspects.  Since 2013, she has testified in both State and Federal on cases involving Arson and Insurance Fraud cases.  Elisabeth has testified as an Expert Witness in the Area of Origin and Cause in State Court on eight occasions.  In 2004 and 2009 she assisted with the recreation and development of a joint fire investigation unit between the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee Fire Department.

      Elisabeth has been a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) Wisconsin Chapter since 1998 and the International Chapter since 1999.  In 2002, she received a Certificate of Appreciation from International Chapter of IAAI for her work during the International Conference.  Then in 2003, she was appointed to the position of Seminar Chair of IAAI- WI Chapter.  In 2005, Elisabeth received Presidential Appreciation Award from WI-IAAI for her work on the seminar committee.  Elisabeth stepped as seminar chairperson in 2007 and received Life Time Membership Award.

      Teaching is another one of Elisabeth’s passions.  In 2008 she started teaching fire investigation at MATC during their Detective training seminar.   In 2015 she was given the opportunity to teach Basic Fire Investigation within MATC’s Fire Science Associates Degree program.  Elisabeth has developed her own training curriculum for a Burn Pattern recognition class with a live burn component.  Currently, she teaches in MATC’s Police Science Associates Degree and Recruit Programs. In the Spring of 2018, Elisabeth will be graduating with a Master’s Degree in Adult Education.

        Jake has over 10 years of firefighting experience and five years as a fire investigator for the Naperville Fire Department.  He has led or assisted in over 150 hours of fire scene investigations. These investigations have taken place in residential, commercial and vehicle fires in cooperation with the Office of the State Fire Marshal, DuPage County Arson Task Force, Local Fire Departments as well as the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.  Jake is also a member of the DuPage County Arson Task Force, Will, Cook, Grundy Task Force, Naperville Fire Investigation Team, and Naperville HazMat Team.  He is an instructor for the Naperville Fire Department in Basic Operations Firefighter, Vehicle Machinery Operations and Fire Investigations. He has assisted in instruction for the IAAI in basic fire investigations, vehicle fires, scene reconstruction and arsons.  Jake is certified as a Fire Investigator, Arson Investigator, HazMat Tech A, Fire Officer I, Instructor I and Vehicle Machinery Operations through the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
